So, its christmas again for developers and website admins alike!
Joomla 1.6 is out for the masses, bringing with it a host of new features that make our developers very happy.
These include but are not limited to:
- Finer access controls for viewing and editing content with configurable user groups and viewing levels
- A user-defined category structure, from simple one-level to complex multi-level categories
- Installation improvements allowing for multiple extension installations in one package, updatable with a single click
- Expanded language support for easy production of multi-lingual sites
- Start and end publishing times for modules with more control over where they display,
- Fresh new templates and semantic markup to please the eye as well as the search engines
- More creative control through template styles
- Hundreds of additional features, streamlining workflow and productivity
So why is this all so exciting to us? Well it brings joomla into a new era where it has finally become a full rounded API that takes it from a generic Content Management System (CMS) into a development framework that we'll see a new wave of applications emerging for.
Not only that, but Joomla powered websites make up 2.6% of the web so a recent statistic revealed , and Joomla received more than twice the number of google searches than Drupal. This doesnt just include small comapnies and individuals. Major corporate organisations and some of the businest webites in the world run on Joomla - including the most popular venue in the world - the O2 Arena (although it looks like they could use a hand from a Joomla Expert like us with their seo and search engine friendly urls!)
Watch this space for some of the new things that we will be producing for the new API!

I totally agree, Joomla 1.6 is a great milestone in the Joomla community. The new access control and doing away with sections will make 1.6 much easier to administer.
