Blog | OD Summary: "How to Build for the Future in Media & Publishing"

Andrew DaviesAnother brilliant LikeMinds 2010 Immersive was just presented by a well-respected panel of publishers: Neil Thackray, Patrick Smith, Stephen Bateman and Andrew Davies. They discussed the curation vs. creation debate and outlined the changes in business models linked to this debate.

Andrew Davies (of Idio UK) has spoken with us about content curation before on the Organic Development blog, so it was great to have a catch up.

Out of the whole workshop, 3 important questions posed by the panel really stood out:

1) What value does creation have in a world with so much content?
2) Is curation a better way to make money these days?
3) Has the proliferation in curation led to a market where companies NEED to be publishers in some form?

To a certain extent, we’ve discussed questions 1 and 2 in earlier blog posts. Regarding the third question, I would suggest that the answer is yes. Companies need to act as publishers for the sake of competitive advantage. The great thing is that publishing content needn’t be time or resource intensive, and it can often be truly beneficial to a business.

Many thanks to the facilitators, I'm off to the next talk!
