I just listened to the first Immersive Workshop of the 2010 LikeMinds conference and it was - as expected - insightful and engaging. Here’s Organic Development’s take on some of the issues she discussed.Joanne talked about the role of social media in sales and advertising, and highlighted the fact that social platforms such as Facebook and Twitter are not best suited for selling new products.
New businesses would be somewhat naive to think that they could implement their entire marketing strategies through social media and social media alone. Most consumers simply won’t buy a new-to-market product because of a Tweet. What does this mean for the start-up company that adopts such a strategy? Extremely low returns on investment.
Joanne went on to describe the best use of social media for small businesses: customer retention. In a medium with unprecedented potential for insight, understanding and knowledge, it is possible to maintain and improve mutually beneficial relationships with customers at minimum cost to the company.
Thanks to Joanne for her excellent workshop. I’m looking forward to the next one!
