The first of the keynote speakers at LikeMinds 2010 has just finished his talk. Here are some pertinent points from Guy’s thought-provoking speech.-Social media isn’t making money.
-We live in a society where newspapers, out-of-copyright books and other types of media are available for nothing.
-But where’s this going to lead us? Every time people (whether it’s Rupert Murdoch Facebook) try to monetise their online services, they get slated.
-We’re training a whole generation to expect a lot of these services for nothing e.g. Google Docs, Spotify, Youtube etc.
-Nobody wants to pay for anything, but where does this become sustainable?
-There’s currently a disconnect between providing something for free and living in the real world.
-The trouble is, there’s no model to replace the paid-for model. You can’t complain if a free service goes wrong.
-The more this free model continues, the less spare cash will be available for innovation.
-We need to prepare for change in the unpaid model.
-The next generation expects freebies, but (ironically) they’ll be stuck with our bills.
Thanks Guy!
