8 Top tips to Help you Get The Best Out Of Your Google Local Listings

Posted by organic in Untagged

picture_12.pngDid you know...

From June 2008 - June 2009, Google's local search market share grew from 15% to 26%. With this increase, do you know what your share of this market is when it comes to your website traffic and leads?

Using Google, it's possible to track leads using their local business listings and make sure you're getting the most out of it with better search engine rankings that will drive traffic to your business in the online and offline world. You can access Google local here.

Here are a few tips on how to achieve greater exposure for your business in the search engine rankings, using Google's local listings:

1)    Business information should be accurate and consistent
Make sure that your business information across the Internet remains consistent and up-to-date. Google relies on the information it finds on other IYP (Internet Yellow Pages) sites to improve the relevancy of its own results.

Before adding your business to Google Local Listings, make sure that other directory based websites, such as LinkCentre and HotFrog UK, have the correct data supplied. Any inconsistencies such as a change of address or telephone number, can be detriment to your position in Google.

2)    Claim and Verify Your Listing
There are still many unclaimed business listings in local areas on Google, so just adding your listing and having it verified can instantly give you an advantage over other, similar businesses in your area.

3)    Consolidate Your Presence on Google Maps
Many businesses on Google have more than one local listing, appearing multiple times on Google maps. This is fine if you have more than one physical building for your company, but if not, claim yourself as the owner to any listings of your business and narrow it down to one location on the map. These locations need to represent your business presence in the real world as well as online!

4)    Categorisation Is Key
When adding a Google local listing, assigning your business to the most relevant categories can make the difference between having the best Google position in your town, and not appearing at all!

As you add relevant categories for your business, Google suggests relevant ones to assign that already exist in their directory. Make sure that the first category you add fits into one of these and accurately describes what your business does as a whole.

You can add several categories, so add as many as you can that Google suggest, that fits in well with your business. If there are none left to consider, you can add your own custom categories. Custom categories are a good time to consider more niche areas that your business is involved with, but make sure the category you name is likely to be what visitors search for.

5)    Adding A Description

A description should present a summary of what products or services your business provides, along with a brief to inspire potential clients. If there is something unique or extraordinary about your business mention that too. Has your business won any awards, or is it the oldest running business in your area or industry?

6)    Add Pictures and Videos
Adding rich-media to your listing provides greater interaction for potential leads, creating more involvement to help push potential conversation rates up. Up to 10 images and 5 videos can be uploaded so make sure that your logo, a photo of your company's building and any commercials or interviews you have are added into the mix.

7)    Details, details, details

In the details section you should specify your business open hours, payment options available and any additional points of interest, such as free car parking and WIFI access. The more content you add, the better the listing will perform.

8)    Coupons
You can add coupons for customers to use who come across your Google local listing. This provides a reliable way of tracking leads, knowing that they came specifically from the Google local listing, and not a general search result. It also acts as an incentive to contact you over and above other contacts.

And To Finish Off...
  • Make sure you have a Google profile about yourself as an individual and that the two profiles link together.
  • Link to your Google local listing from other profiles you have on the web, to increase its positioning for localised searches such as "web development in Exeter".
  • Make sure that important keywords are mentioned in any business listings, whilst retaining its readability and original meaning.
  • If you have multiple sites, use the bulk upload tool to manage them. This will make maintenance easier and less time consuming.
So that is a brief summary of the type of activity you should be undertaking to help maximise the impact of your Google Local listings.  If you have any questions, or you would like to get one of our team of Google Experts to take a look at your listings, call us on 0845 869 7654, or email james@organic-development.com
